Blue Lock Part 1

Published on: 2nd August, 2023

Southern Senpais discuss their review of the first season of the anime Blue Lock. We find it interesting that the show refers to soccer as "soccer" instead of "football," and it's due to the American audience. Despite not being fans of sports anime, we enjoyed Blue Lock and the animation style. Listen in to part 1 of Southern Senpais

howdy.

Speaker:

It's the Southern SPI Show where small town Southerners explore big

Speaker:

time Japanese entertainment, anime, manga, and everything in between.

Speaker:

Here's your hosts, Nicholas and dj.

Speaker:

Welcome.

Speaker:

Japanese culture.

Speaker:

I'm dj.

Speaker:

I'm Nicholas.

Speaker:

Hey Nicholas.

Speaker:

What are you talking about?

Speaker:

Today we are talking about Blue Lock, the first part of Blue Lock.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

So there's 24 episodes and we're going to be talking about the first 13.

Speaker:

So, , we're a little late to the party on this one.

Speaker:

Blue Lock is actually a pretty interesting, , one of the biggest

Speaker:

things that I picked up that I thought was interesting is that they

Speaker:

call it soccer and not football.

Speaker:

It shows the power of America, man, because Right.

Speaker:

Literally no one else in the entire world, even other English

Speaker:

speaking countries called it.

Speaker:

Soccer, only America calls it soccer.

Speaker:

So they must have been like, oh, we want the Americans to like it.

Speaker:

So for clarification, we saw the English dub.

Speaker:

Yeah, no, we definitely English dub for sure.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

And in the English dub they call it, they call it si.

Speaker:

So they could call it something else in the Japanese, you know, self

Speaker:

probably call it football like everyone else, like everybody else does.

Speaker:

I remember talking to somebody when I first moved here to Los Angeles and

Speaker:

they was like, oh, it's called soccer.

Speaker:

And some guy was like, Why do you guys call it soccer?

Speaker:

He was like, it's literally football.

Speaker:

And I was like, you guys called it soccer first and then you called it football.

Speaker:

Really?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Go look it up.

Speaker:

They called it soccer first and then they called it football.

Speaker:

I did not know that.

Speaker:

So we're right.

Speaker:

We are right.

Speaker:

America.

Speaker:

We're Americans.

Speaker:

America we're always right.

Speaker:

Oh my gosh.

Speaker:

And they're not even know.

Speaker:

They call it soccer first and then they call it football.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Well, I just learned something today.

Speaker:

I just, right here on this podcast.

Speaker:

I didn't, , are you being serious?

Speaker:

I'm pretty sure but regardless of which, , blue Lock is pretty

Speaker:

interesting, , for a sports anime.

Speaker:

It's not really our forte Sports anime.

Speaker:

, , I'll be honest, this is not my type of anime that I watch.

Speaker:

, and , whenever we got the suggestion, Hey, you should try check out Blue Lock.

Speaker:

I was like, I really, I'm really, this is not my type of anime.

Speaker:

Like I, I'm really hesitant to watch this, but I'm not gonna lie from the first

Speaker:

episode, I was like, oh, this is dope.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's actually surprisingly really well done.

Speaker:

There's a lot of inner monologues and lot of right anime logic.

Speaker:

Then just God, like a whole bunch of like anime logic where it's

Speaker:

like, oh my gosh, what do you didn't notice was like this blade of grass.

Speaker:

I mean that it isn't, this doesn't happen on the show.

Speaker:

There's no blade of grass thing, but like still, , Yeah, it, it

Speaker:

was, it was, it was pretty good.

Speaker:

, you wanna go?

Speaker:

Spoiler warning, we're gonna give a spoiler warning.

Speaker:

Yeah, spoiler.

Speaker:

Well, I mean, you should, you should know this.

Speaker:

You should already know that.

Speaker:

Like, I don't have to, you know, I wanna be in the comments being like,

Speaker:

oh, no, spoilers, like, bro, come on.

Speaker:

, it's part one, episode one through 13.

Speaker:

. Just spoil the warning for all of it.

Speaker:

All right, so Nicholas, that first 13 episodes,

Speaker:

so basically what the premise of this anime is, is these high schoolers

Speaker:

are, their dream is to become pro.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Represent Japan.

Speaker:

I'm going to eat a sandwich during this.

Speaker:

Really?

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Very hungry.

Speaker:

So what, so what Couldn't have, you couldn't have ate it before.

Speaker:

So it's half finished.

Speaker:

Why didn't you just finish it?

Speaker:

I, because, because we, it doesn't matter, man.

Speaker:

They're not listening to me.

Speaker:

Go ahead now, now you're just gonna be chomping in the mic.

Speaker:

No, I want it to the side.

Speaker:

I want it to the side.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

Yeah, I, I'll put the podcast on my back for a second while

Speaker:

you finish your sandwich.

Speaker:

Thank you.

Speaker:

I appreciate that.

Speaker:

So anyway, so this part, it's a PB and j, which is a classic.

Speaker:

Goddamn.

Speaker:

Are you finished?

Speaker:

Yeah, yeah,

Speaker:

yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

I'm done.

Speaker:

I'm done.

Speaker:

I'm done.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

So, Mm, is that good?

Speaker:

Oh, yeah, sandwich.

Speaker:

The sandwiches are hitting right now, man.

Speaker:

But anyway, so Blue Lock, it's, , about , this guy.

Speaker:

And he plays high school and like, you know, soccer is

Speaker:

life for these people, right?

Speaker:

And he's in his, , high school soccer game.

Speaker:

And they're trying to go to nationals and at the end of the episode he decides

Speaker:

to pass it instead of go for the shot.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

And, and they lose.

Speaker:

And it, bro, I'm no, my sandwich me.

Speaker:

Dude.

Speaker:

You ha, your, your mouth is full of peanut butter.

Speaker:

Not all, it's not bad enough that you're eating, but it's peanut butter and jelly.

Speaker:

Yeah, man.

Speaker:

Don't like be butter and jelly because you're, ma'am,

Speaker:

you don't like peanut butter.

Speaker:

I mean, I have no problem with them.

Speaker:

Okay, then, but I'm not, I'm not stopping you from, from giving you part.

Speaker:

Go ahead, man, because you said you're gonna be chewing like a cow.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

I'll fight.

Speaker:

Fine.

Speaker:

Fine.

Speaker:

Go ahead.

Speaker:

Go ahead.

Speaker:

But anyway, so he passes the ball instead of shooting it.

Speaker:

And he is really upset because the guy doesn't do it.

Speaker:

He doesn't hit the goal and they don't win.

Speaker:

And this guy's basically having a mental breakdown and crying because

Speaker:

the guy didn't shoot it right.

Speaker:

And his whole life is flashing before him.

Speaker:

He thinks it's the end of life.

Speaker:

And anyway, this guy, He gets an invitation to go

Speaker:

to this, , blue Lock place.

Speaker:

And basically the place is, a boarding school to create, the best

Speaker:

soccer player, and they're gonna put him under intense pressure.

Speaker:

They're not gonna see anybody.

Speaker:

They're literally going to eat, sleep, and breathe soccer.

Speaker:

It's run by this guy whose name is ego.

Speaker:

Which is weird because they want them to become egoist.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Basically narcissist, like we were talking about.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Basically narcissist.

Speaker:

Like I also think it's weird how he tells them, well he doesn't call them

Speaker:

a narcissist, he calls 'em egoist.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

But, , it's kind of weird to me that they need to become egoist and his name is ego.

Speaker:

I'm sure there'll be some explanation of this like later on, but basically Japan

Speaker:

is mad cause I never win a World Cup.

Speaker:

Right, which, hey, to be fair, get in line.

Speaker:

There's a lot of nations out there that have not won a World Cup.

Speaker:

How?

Speaker:

Like actually, how many World Cups is America One?

Speaker:

Now I think about it, I don't know.

Speaker:

Right?

Speaker:

You continue.

Speaker:

I'm gonna look this up.

Speaker:

I'm gonna look this up right now.

Speaker:

But, , anyway, so what he does is he sit, he invites all the best,

Speaker:

, football strikers and he says, Hey, I am going to make the best striker.

Speaker:

And what's going to happen is, , you're not gonna go home.

Speaker:

, there's a guy there that just won and they're going to nationals and he is like,

Speaker:

I can't leave, I can't abandon my team.

Speaker:

And he's like,

Speaker:

no problem.

Speaker:

Nobody's keeping you here.

Speaker:

He said, but I am going to make the best football striker ever.

Speaker:

And so he is like, you know what?

Speaker:

I'm gonna stay just to, you know, prove this guy wrong.

Speaker:

So he says, if you want to come, get in here.

Speaker:

, and then they play tag.

Speaker:

The very first, , game, was like tag.

Speaker:

It was a tag.

Speaker:

Also, the old sidebar here, there's a guy next to him who, , well, you

Speaker:

didn't tell him the stakes, man.

Speaker:

You didn't tell him what happens if they lose.

Speaker:

You have the chance to become the greatest, but if you lose it all, it's

Speaker:

like, You do not get to play soccer for you represent your country anymore.

Speaker:

Ever.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Ever.

Speaker:

You don't, yeah.

Speaker:

, you give up the chance to be pro.

Speaker:

I mean, you could play little soccer here and there, but it's not gonna be worth it

Speaker:

if you can never make it to that, right.

Speaker:

That old time.

Speaker:

And plus there's some other guy there who was like, he was on his way to

Speaker:

nationals cuz he from the opposite team.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

He's a really nice guy.

Speaker:

By the end of the first episode, , the, the, the main character kicks

Speaker:

a ball at him and makes him lose.

Speaker:

, and he's like the pride of, like Japan at this point, the pride

Speaker:

of, ooh, there's always a pride.

Speaker:

And he has like this mental breakdown.

Speaker:

He's like, I'm the pride.

Speaker:

I'm the gym.

Speaker:

He's like, how?

Speaker:

He was really nice until he lost and he was like, how, how?

Speaker:

, you've ruined everything from me.

Speaker:

This isn't really real.

Speaker:

And it turns out it is quite real.

Speaker:

Like that is like , the, you don't, you don't hear or see from him ever again.

Speaker:

, there's like a woman side character who you rarely see very rarely,

Speaker:

but she's always like talking to like these businessmen or like the

Speaker:

heads of like Japan talking about like, oh, blue lock is important.

Speaker:

You gotta give us money so we can do X, Y, Z.

Speaker:

So it seems like she's gonna be in charge of who gets into the World Cup at all.

Speaker:

And since she's in league with ego, it's like there might be some validity, the

Speaker:

fact that they could never play again.

Speaker:

Ego is very manipulative.

Speaker:

He tells them they have to go against each other and he goes, soccer is

Speaker:

originally a game of 11 strikers, right?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

, it's a game of 11 strikers.

Speaker:

And, you know, we just devolved into supporting characters to what, you

Speaker:

know, what, around that one thing.

Speaker:

And the, the main part is like turning a, a zero to a one.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

It was zero to a one.

Speaker:

And, , the main protagonist, what's his name again?

Speaker:

The main protagonist.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

You know what's crazy?

Speaker:

I think it's Oggie Oggie or something like that.

Speaker:

Something like that.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

What's weird is that I remember we might not be cultured

Speaker:

enough to, we might not be.

Speaker:

That's why like I have so much trouble with names.

Speaker:

That's what made nineties, like older anime.

Speaker:

So much better.

Speaker:

Like, cause you can remember their names.

Speaker:

What's this guy's name?

Speaker:

Goku.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

Cooling.

Speaker:

These aren't hard names.

Speaker:

They're remember All right.

Speaker:

Not Ruto.

Speaker:

Right?

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Each you go.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

These man people's names iguana Savannah, like, bro, like, how am I supposed, I

Speaker:

can't even spell, I can't even say that.

Speaker:

Like, yeah, and it's not like they need to make the names memorable for

Speaker:

Americans or English speaking people.

Speaker:

I'm sure if we were Japanese, they'll just roll off the tongue.

Speaker:

Yeah, I'm sure.

Speaker:

I'm sure they maybe.

Speaker:

You know, it could be like John Smith in America and basically,

Speaker:

yeah, but, but since we're not, you know, Japanese, we're just like, Hey

Speaker:

man, I don't, I don't understand.

Speaker:

Plus we were watching the English dub.

Speaker:

, when you watch a sub, you have to read and listen to the names, so it's like, okay.

Speaker:

It's easy to remember that way, but compared to only hearing it

Speaker:

once, but basically he gets support on this team of like 11 people.

Speaker:

, and they're the lowest, the low team Z

Speaker:

he starts off with number 2 99 outta 300.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

And you know, they all kind of sunk and it's like a ragtag

Speaker:

team of them getting together.

Speaker:

There is not a lot of plot that happens in this.

Speaker:

They don't did like just do it.

Speaker:

So there's been like, what, three games?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Three games.

Speaker:

And then in the episode 13, there's like a there's like a,

Speaker:

I wouldn't even call it a game.

Speaker:

I'd call it a what?

Speaker:

A test.

Speaker:

But what you're really watching this for is the, I mean, this

Speaker:

guys just have so much drive.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Well, I mean, if you lose it, it's over.

Speaker:

Like you're done.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And they train so hard.

Speaker:

And it also really makes me think about like, Other parts in our

Speaker:

own lives that we want to do.

Speaker:

Like for example, like some of this is actually backed by science.

Speaker:

Like if you are trading towards one goal and getting better at

Speaker:

something every single day and you're surrounding yourself by people who

Speaker:

are also trying to get better, it's like I say, flock together, right?

Speaker:

So if you're tr you know, surrounding you who are trained to get better,

Speaker:

you're gonna train to get better, which is going to make you better.

Speaker:

There's a lot of pressure on you.

Speaker:

Yeah, tremendous.

Speaker:

Science has also said that a lot of pressure.

Speaker:

You know pressure makes diamonds.

Speaker:

Exactly, exactly.

Speaker:

So tons of pressure.

Speaker:

, lots of, , people like-minded, goals and things like that.

Speaker:

What I noticed is there's not a whole lot of plot in this anime, but there

Speaker:

is tons of character development.

Speaker:

Yeah, man.

Speaker:

I think that might be the only thing really in this anime

Speaker:

is character development.

Speaker:

Like, it, there is a ton of character development and a ton of If you guys

Speaker:

watch the anime, there's a ton of like anime logic and a ton of like anime.

Speaker:

There's tons of pile, inner monologue and yeah, you know, I must, I must do this.

Speaker:

And, you know, all of these things.

Speaker:

Well, like you said, this one blade of grass, if it turns to a 45 degree angle,

Speaker:

I can get it to hit the shot like this.

Speaker:

And it, it's, , it's a whole lot of, it's like the Dragon Ball Z type stuff,

Speaker:

like Dragon Ball Z type anime logic.

Speaker:

Right?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's a lot of it is a, it's.

Speaker:

Because they all know that eventually only one of them can be the best.

Speaker:

But instead of being like, oh, it's a power of friendship, it's

Speaker:

more like, oh no, we're gonna lose.

Speaker:

Wait a minute.

Speaker:

I like playing soccer.

Speaker:

Wait a minute, the ball's over the air.

Speaker:

That's my power.

Speaker:

Spatial awareness.

Speaker:

And I'm like, , other people don't have spatial awareness.

Speaker:

Well, and then what spatial awarenesses is being aware that

Speaker:

over there and you're over here.

Speaker:

Well, and then also they had to, they had to learn how to become a team.

Speaker:

Because remember the first couple of episodes, they were all like, Hey, well

Speaker:

there's only one person that can succeed.

Speaker:

So they were all like, we're all just gonna, you know, Rogers are gonna

Speaker:

lose and we're gonna work together.

Speaker:

Sidebar, real fast.

Speaker:

I don't think America has ever won.

Speaker:

I didn't think of America has ever won a World Cup.

Speaker:

No America's never won a World Cup.

Speaker:

To be fair, like no, we win at everything else though.

Speaker:

You know?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I mean, yeah.

Speaker:

Mean we were pretty awesome.

Speaker:

So, this, I think that, , Brazil is probably like Brazil, like countries

Speaker:

like Brazil, countries like Madrid.

Speaker:

Madrid is not country.

Speaker:

Countries like Spain, it's definitely Spain.

Speaker:

Your weakness is definitely geography.

Speaker:

Countries like countries like Spain.

Speaker:

Or stand out mainly because it's like, okay, well that's

Speaker:

why country's like main sport.

Speaker:

Like, well, there was, it's part of the culture.

Speaker:

I mean, it's kind of like football here, like American football.

Speaker:

There was international football league.

Speaker:

America would dominate because it's, it's our culture to play this game

Speaker:

in the same aspect of when there's a lot of Hispanic countries within

Speaker:

their aspects to play that game well.

Speaker:

Also, there's, there is hardly any startup cost.

Speaker:

To play soccer.

Speaker:

All you need is a soccer ball.

Speaker:

That's all.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

That's all you need is a soccer ball, actual American football.

Speaker:

It costs money to play.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

This like rugby's cheaper than, than, you know, picking up a, a football, right.

Speaker:

Cuz you got helmets, you got pads, you got, you know, you gotta have the field.

Speaker:

You gotta, so I think the, I think the, the closest we've ever been to

Speaker:

winning, it's like type top 16, right?

Speaker:

No, the first ever time we were there was 1930.

Speaker:

We won third place.

Speaker:

Well, how about recently?

Speaker:

I ain't gonna lie to you, bro.

Speaker:

I ain't looking too good recently.

Speaker:

Like I, I was, okay, so 2022, we were disqualified.

Speaker:

We, we made, we lost at around 16 like.

Speaker:

We were, we were number 14, 2006.

Speaker:

We lost the first rounds at 25.

Speaker:

At nine.

Speaker:

1998, we lost the first round groups.

Speaker:

It's not even a, it's like, yeah, we were 32.

Speaker:

But anyway, so in 2018, we didn't even participate.

Speaker:

We didn't even make the qualifiers.

Speaker:

We, we didn't even, we did not.

Speaker:

It says there's a dash next to our names that says didn't even qualify.

Speaker:

Did not partic, we did not even qualify.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So, I mean, and it's hard to say.

Speaker:

I will tell you this.

Speaker:

If there was money in it, like there is football, we would have more soccer.

Speaker:

Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker:

That's how America runs.

Speaker:

When something makes money, it's like, oh, this is the thing.

Speaker:

This is what we're gonna do.

Speaker:

Like, it doesn't matter what it is.

Speaker:

If was kickball and it made money.

Speaker:

Well, I mean it's, it's been said, it's been said for years that what

Speaker:

the players in Europe and everywhere else do is like, they play their

Speaker:

primes at their home country club.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Or their, yeah.

Speaker:

Whoever, whatever the politics of that goes on.

Speaker:

And then in their later years they come and play for the US for

Speaker:

like huge amounts of money because they're like, Americans are stupid.

Speaker:

You know, the players and they suck.

Speaker:

The players are so bad in America.

Speaker:

In the us.

Speaker:

Yeah, that even late out of my prime, I'm still way better than

Speaker:

any of these soccer players.

Speaker:

Could you imagine that America has both messy and Ronald, , Christian

Speaker:

Ronaldo on the same team in the future?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

No, I'm not gonna lie, those guys are getting up in age and

Speaker:

they are still really good.

Speaker:

They're still really, they do for some reason, coming to America,

Speaker:

we might, that might just be, we might just make it to number seven.

Speaker:

Well, here's the place, here's the thing.

Speaker:

I think if all of the, I think if all the players of the NFL and

Speaker:

the nba, if they were to go into soccer, it'd just be over with.

Speaker:

I don't know about N NBA because soccer is a lot of endur, the nfl.

Speaker:

I believe that football players will be better at it than N NBA players.

Speaker:

By a wide margin.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

Be mainly cuz of the endurance that it takes.

Speaker:

Not saying there's no endurance in, in basketball, running up and down.

Speaker:

I mean, I did sprints myself, they suck, right?

Speaker:

But at the same time it's like, it's just different man.

Speaker:

When you're, when you're, when you're playing soccer, you're sprinting

Speaker:

literally consistently, right?

Speaker:

When you're playing football, you play, there's a down, it's

Speaker:

eight seconds at a time, right?

Speaker:

It's eight seconds at a time.

Speaker:

But I guess ba, actually, now I think about it.

Speaker:

Basketball's more continuous than that.

Speaker:

Yeah, but it's kinda like the same thing too.

Speaker:

I mean, I guess there's less time downtime.

Speaker:

No, no.

Speaker:

You might, you might actually, you might have a point about that.

Speaker:

Who do you think is faster NBA players or, or N players?

Speaker:

I.

Speaker:

, it depends cuz it could, it could be like what's the guy,

Speaker:

we're not including kickers.

Speaker:

Right?

Speaker:

It could, it could be like what was that guy?

Speaker:

With the, with the, with the yellow hair That's his weapon is

Speaker:

dribbling and he's really fast.

Speaker:

Oh.

Speaker:

Because it was that, it was that it was that soccer game where he

Speaker:

was faster, but the other dude had the better acceleration.

Speaker:

You talking about the redheaded guy?

Speaker:

Not, not the guy with the yellow hair.

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

Talking about in blue log.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

In blue log.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Cuz the redheaded guy had that long red hair cuz his knee was all messed up.

Speaker:

Cuz he was like, oh, I got some, some accident.

Speaker:

No, I'm talking about in when?

Speaker:

Episode 13, when they steal the guy.

Speaker:

Oh, oh this cuz it, yeah.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

So, so I think, I think that would be, I think that would

Speaker:

be like the NFL versus the nba.

Speaker:

, I think the other guy was faster out of desperation.

Speaker:

So in this whole thing, it's about confidence.

Speaker:

We went so far off track.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Blue Lock is about Why do you think I brought it back?

Speaker:

Blue Honk is about confidence, right?

Speaker:

And about building other people's confidence to where they're

Speaker:

known narcissists and they lose their first two matches.

Speaker:

, which is crazy because there's a lot of blood armor in this dude.

Speaker:

There's like, dude, there's like, oh, my superpower is a super, a substantial

Speaker:

amount of, I, have super dribbling.

Speaker:

Oh, we have monsters on all of side of us.

Speaker:

Cuz that's, that's just our abilities.

Speaker:

We have these monsters inside of us tonight.

Speaker:

Oh, I, I betrayed my, I portray my team and then at the last second I, you know,

Speaker:

I foul him off so that, yeah, this guy, so they, they lost their second game.

Speaker:

Well, they were, yeah, they lost their second game too.

Speaker:

There's this guy who basically was like, oh, I think we're gonna

Speaker:

lose, so I'm gonna betray them and give away all of our tactics.

Speaker:

And then he got a hat trick, and by some technicality, he would

Speaker:

move on, but his team would lose.

Speaker:

So then the next one, they're playing 10 versus 12.

Speaker:

And through rigorous blood armor, rigorous.

Speaker:

They end up, they end up about to pull it off right before they're out to lose

Speaker:

The guy who betrayed them tackles the other guy and gives 'em a right card.

Speaker:

Well, the thing was is that I.

Speaker:

They said, okay, if you lose, your team loses, but the top striker on

Speaker:

the team is going to go forward.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

And well, who scored him?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Who scored the most points.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And so since he had the hat trick of last time, he scored the most points.

Speaker:

I'll say this.

Speaker:

They, they tried to do their best to make all the characters look

Speaker:

individual or, or be different.

Speaker:

A lot of the characters are designed, I mean, you're gonna have regular background

Speaker:

characters who don't even, they, the artists don't even have the, the.

Speaker:

Will to draw their eyes.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

But one of the guys looks like, like you can look at, you can look at these,

Speaker:

these roster players and be like, yeah, I know each, there's 11 of them.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

That's like, yeah, none of 'em really look too similar.

Speaker:

There's one guy they barely talk about, , there's like, so go on

Speaker:

the list is like short comedy guy, main guy whose hair is blueish.

Speaker:

No, it's not.

Speaker:

It's black, but he's like blue eyes.

Speaker:

Didn't they have the guy with the red hair?

Speaker:

He looks like echiko.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Then you got some egy go looking guy who wants to be a

Speaker:

superhero, whatever that's about.

Speaker:

Then you have some guy with super long red hair who's like really fast.

Speaker:

Then you have some shark guy.

Speaker:

You have a guy who's been a goalie this whole time.

Speaker:

He's like, yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

I'm gonna be a great tracker too.

Speaker:

Sorry, bro.

Speaker:

You've been a goalie this whole time and have blocked only one shot out of what?

Speaker:

Like 80 billion?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Get outta here, bro.

Speaker:

And then like, like what has this guy done?

Speaker:

Like nothing.

Speaker:

Then when you say that during episodes, like how many.

Speaker:

How many goals has this man ever blocked?

Speaker:

Like none.

Speaker:

None.

Speaker:

He blocked.

Speaker:

He barely blocked one and was like, he needed a plot armor to do it.

Speaker:

It was a plot armor, gold block.

Speaker:

He should not have blocked it.

Speaker:

Then you got I already said the comedy guy.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Then you got this guy who was rated agility.

Speaker:

He has white hair, black hair.

Speaker:

Then you got the betray guy who's, who never opens his eyes at all

Speaker:

and you got the bgo, , shark guy.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Did I say the Bgo shark guy?

Speaker:

I guess not the Argo shark guy.

Speaker:

Then you also have some other really random dude who's like,

Speaker:

he has like brown hair, but they never bring up his name at all.

Speaker:

He's the one who's always fighting with the guy who has white and black hair.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

They're always like arguing with Isaac.

Speaker:

And then is that, and then there's the guy that his superpower is never giving up.

Speaker:

Oh yeah.

Speaker:

And really, yeah.

Speaker:

What your superpower is that you don't give up.

Speaker:

Roll sit.

Speaker:

Sit down.

Speaker:

Sit down.

Speaker:

That's ridiculous.

Speaker:

In the first episode, he almost gets out.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

If it weren't for the jewel of Japan or whatever the dude's name is, we

Speaker:

should probably like learn the names.

Speaker:

We should probably learn these names.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

In the future, we're gonna do a better job of learning people's names.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

But we're Southern, so Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

, yeah.

Speaker:

But that'll be our excuse for everything.

Speaker:

. We're supposed to be learning.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So we don't, we don't know.

Speaker:

We are learning.

Speaker:

And then in the future we'll be learning names.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

But what is your, and then, , in episode 13, I'm gonna do a

Speaker:

little fast forwarding here.

Speaker:

Sure.

Speaker:

So then, , like guess said, we said the, the guy never opens up his eyes.

Speaker:

He betrays them.

Speaker:

Then they end up winning.

Speaker:

, our main character, he learns his superpower, quote unquote,

Speaker:

his weapon is spatial awareness.

Speaker:

Cause I guess no one else has that cause like Yeah, when you're kicking

Speaker:

his soccer, you have tunnel vision.

Speaker:

Like, have you guys actually played soccer?

Speaker:

You need to know where your other teammates are.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

That's called spatial awareness.

Speaker:

Anyway, so then they play the number one, number two, and number three guy.

Speaker:

And it's gonna be, it is him, his friend with the monster guy.

Speaker:

Oh, we didn't even talk about the big twist.

Speaker:

Oh yeah.

Speaker:

And the big twist is that, okay, so this other team that

Speaker:

has never lost basically yeah.

Speaker:

TV V and, and it's this douche bag, purple haired guy who's like, yeah, I'm

Speaker:

super rich, you know, I have everything and I'm good at every single sport.

Speaker:

And so I'm sad because I feel like I never earned anything.

Speaker:

And so, don't you guys feel bad?

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

No one feels bad for you, bro.

Speaker:

You have literally everything.

Speaker:

And it came out that he had only started playing soccer six months ago.

Speaker:

With his friend.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And his, he saw some guy who was like, he thought would be good at soccer

Speaker:

cuz he got a phone with his shoe.

Speaker:

So he was like, oh, you and me we're gonna be super great soccer players.

Speaker:

So I guess they've been winning this whole time, but all he does is

Speaker:

just pass to the white-haired guy.

Speaker:

And the white-haired guy is super lazy, , doesn't wanna play, but he's

Speaker:

so much better than everybody else.

Speaker:

He just like doesn't try and it still wins.

Speaker:

So whenever people start scoring on him and they actually lose, he's

Speaker:

like, whoa, now I guess I can try.

Speaker:

Cuz I, see a challenge.

Speaker:

He tells the purple haired guy to off when it's supposed to partner up later.

Speaker:

He's like, yeah, no, you suck.

Speaker:

You've been writing my coattails this whole time.

Speaker:

I finally have something I actually want to do.

Speaker:

I'm like, thanks for getting me here, because I would've never had anything

Speaker:

to fight for or been interested in anything if you didn't push me to be here.

Speaker:

So thanks for that, but I've been carrying you this whole time.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

I, I'm, I've been.

Speaker:

And then he teams up with the main character, right.

Speaker:

When they've been, they've been rivals the whole time.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Cause I'm like, dude, that's crazy.

Speaker:

But, , then they meet one, two, and three and they learn why those guys

Speaker:

have the one, two, and three rank.

Speaker:

They wipe the floor with them, wipe the floor with them.

Speaker:

One could have wiped the floor with all three of 'em.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

They, the number one, number two, and number three, they

Speaker:

don't even need teamwork.

Speaker:

They just literally, That you can just score goals by themselves

Speaker:

without passing it or anything.

Speaker:

The number three guy, he's really weird because he is the complete

Speaker:

opposite of everyone else.

Speaker:

Everyone else has a super high ego and like, I'm better there

Speaker:

than you got better than that.

Speaker:

And that's what allows me to score so much, da, da, da.

Speaker:

That's the whole point, right?

Speaker:

Is that having super high egos allows you to be the best, right?

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

This guy has the ego of, , a dying snail, , this guy as the ego of a turtle

Speaker:

of, , a turtle being boiled alive, right?

Speaker:

This man.

Speaker:

This man.

Speaker:

And that's, that's what propels him to be amazing.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Cause he's just like, he's super desperate for validation.

Speaker:

So he ends up being really, really good, which is hilarious.

Speaker:

The second guy is, He just seems the only one who's actually just a regular guy who

Speaker:

might be naturally talented, except he thinks he's really glamorous and has black

Speaker:

pink nails, , black, , painted nails.

Speaker:

Yeah, he's kinda like androgynous.

Speaker:

Yeah, I think he's androgynous.

Speaker:

And then the number one guy, he's like, yeah, my older brother who's the top

Speaker:

player in Japan, I'm going to defeat him.

Speaker:

Blame soccer is like living on a battlefield.

Speaker:

It's life or death for me.

Speaker:

And I'm like, yo, dude, you have nothing going on in your life, man.

Speaker:

I mean, it's supposed to be really cool, but it comes off as like,

Speaker:

he's like a pretentious loser.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

And she's like, you know, I would rather die than defeat.

Speaker:

I get, like, defeat for me is death.

Speaker:

So I was like, all right, that, that's a little too much.

Speaker:

I get it.

Speaker:

But he's the crazy part is, is that hes so much more talented.

Speaker:

Looks like then two or three, right?

Speaker:

He's two and three are probably like base OT in this world.

Speaker:

Like when I mean base, I mean like fighting Reddis bass.

Speaker:

This guy Isal already number one is already super saying, oh, that's how

Speaker:

it could be like super saying three.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Like he is leagues of, he kicks a soccer ball in the air and then curves it,

Speaker:

kicks the second one, curves it, and they both hit themselves in the air.

Speaker:

And then this man scores a goal from his corner kick by.

Speaker:

Just like with the spin off the ball.

Speaker:

Like, are you serious?

Speaker:

Are you being serious right now?

Speaker:

I've never even thought of so conceived of the, that.

Speaker:

I think in these future episodes, it's about to get real wonky.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

No real wonky, . Yeah.

Speaker:

I, I'm, I'm actually excited to, to watch the rest of it.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's actually still really pretty much entertaining.

Speaker:

But yeah.

Speaker:

So what's your verdict on the first half?

Speaker:

No, I, I think the, I think the first half of it is, But it was really good.

Speaker:

But I do have to say though, like if you guys couldn't tell, like I'll

Speaker:

give you guys a little backstory.

Speaker:

So me, my anime tastes and DJ's, anime tastes are completely different.

Speaker:

So yeah, DJ is a, I agree with that.

Speaker:

Is an anime snob.

Speaker:

I am not.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

You're an anime snob.

Speaker:

Am not.

Speaker:

I am not.

Speaker:

Just cause you're definitely an anime Sno.

Speaker:

He's just what?

Speaker:

Just cuz I I want more story no.

Speaker:

I have nothing to do with that I don't care about you.

Speaker:

I didn't say you specifically, but you automatically like,

Speaker:

oh, oh, you got defensive.

Speaker:

I didn't even say you, did I say you?

Speaker:

I like anime.

Speaker:

That doesn't take itself seriously.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And you like high brow?

Speaker:

You know, it's probably, cuz I don't watch as much anime.

Speaker:

Like, so when it's, I wanna watch something, I don't watch that much anime.

Speaker:

I mean, that's why we're doing this in the first place, right?

Speaker:

Because we're both anime experts and it, I don't think it would work.

Speaker:

But, , you know, We both said, Hey, we should really get more into it.

Speaker:

That's what we're both watching, but basically the anime that gets to be,

Speaker:

or that I end up watching, if it's not straight up Dragon Balls E or like Ichigo

Speaker:

or like Bleach or something like that.

Speaker:

If it wasn't on T nami, I'll say it like that.

Speaker:

If it wasn't on T nami.

Speaker:

Basically it's stuff that everything that, it's pretty much the super high

Speaker:

rated mainstream stuff to be fair.

Speaker:

Right?

Speaker:

It's , yes, I've seen Deaf Note.

Speaker:

Yes, I've seen full Male Alchemist Brotherhood.

Speaker:

That's also really good.

Speaker:

That you're gonna act like you haven't seen?

Speaker:

.Speaking of, speaking of death note, remember I was telling you like Hot

Speaker:

I, my hot take would be that I like Blue Lock more than death note.

Speaker:

I don't think, I don't know if people was find that super controversial.

Speaker:

Especially because like, like a goed animal anime, like everybody loves death.

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

Like it's just like this.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Death no is like, pretty much, it's like saying you don't like Scorsese.

Speaker:

In movies, but that that's only effective to people who are really into movies.

Speaker:

True.

Speaker:

You know what I'm saying?

Speaker:

Like, and there's some people who are really into movies who will swear up

Speaker:

or down that Scorsese is not as good as Christopher Nolan or something like that.

Speaker:

That's one thing about anime is like, everyone's really

Speaker:

defensive about the show.

Speaker:

So what they're gonna be like, you could have said like, oh,

Speaker:

like I really like bastard.

Speaker:

Right?

Speaker:

And then people would just start to be like, oh, you're an idiot.

Speaker:

Cause you didn't say you like mine.

Speaker:

Dude, what?

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Like, like that's how it goes.

Speaker:

So, I mean, but I think most people would disagree with you.

Speaker:

Yes, I do that, I'm pretty sure.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I'm pretty sure people would disagree with me.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

But yeah, no, overall really like the anime.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's lots and lots of character development.

Speaker:

It's not an anime I would've personally seen.

Speaker:

Yeah, me neither.

Speaker:

Soccer.

Speaker:

But like, let's be really here.

Speaker:

When was the last time you seen anything but I saw Ted Lasso.

Speaker:

I finished the first season and I knew it was a season two, and I was

Speaker:

like, eh, yeah, I did like Ted Lasso.

Speaker:

Yeah, I liked Ted Lasso, but I, I didn't like it cuz it was soccer.

Speaker:

Like, the characters are good enough.

Speaker:

Well, I don't think, I don't know how the Japanese do it, man.

Speaker:

They, they, you, they can turn, you know, soccer into really interesting anime.

Speaker:

I swear to God.

Speaker:

It could be, they could be sitting there playing poker and it'd

Speaker:

be like the most intense thing you've ever seen in your life.

Speaker:

But that's the thing, like I think that if they use the formula that they use for

Speaker:

blue lock and made it, they could do food.

Speaker:

I mean, don't they have like anime, like food wars?

Speaker:

Think it's called food wars?

Speaker:

Yeah, I seen, I seen a video of that where some guy eats something and then like

Speaker:

people's clothes start exploding . If you know what's going on in that anime,

Speaker:

let us know because it's very confusing.

Speaker:

Or if we should watch it at all actually.

Speaker:

It might be.

Speaker:

Might be what we watch next.

Speaker:

Yeah, maybe.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

But anyway.

Speaker:

Well, you know, what do you think?

Speaker:

What's your, what's your verdict?

Speaker:

, I sur I like it surprisingly.

Speaker:

Not that I didn't, I didn't think I would've hate it because, I mean,

Speaker:

a lot of people seem to like it, so it's like, eh, if a lot of people

Speaker:

seem to like it, I'll give it a shot.

Speaker:

It probably doesn't suck.

Speaker:

If not everyone hates it.

Speaker:

You know what I'm saying?

Speaker:

Like, I was surprised how much I liked this.

Speaker:

I mean, I saw the animation a little bit and I was like, it

Speaker:

looks like it's pretty good.

Speaker:

I heard the storyline, he was like, oh, it sounds like it's pretty good, but I

Speaker:

didn't think I'd like it as much as I do.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

To be fair, I I like it a lot more than I thought I did, but yeah, that's a

Speaker:

verdict for episodes one through 13.

Speaker:

We will let, , the part one of Blue Lock, we'll be back at you

Speaker:

with, , part two on our next episode.
