Howdy!

Speaker:

It's the Southern Senpai Show, where small town Southerners explore big

Speaker:

time Japanese entertainment, anime, manga, and everything in between.

Speaker:

Here's your hosts, Nicholas and DJ.

Speaker:

What's going on, y'all, Southern Senpais?

Speaker:

You're Two southern guys exploring Japanese culture together.

Speaker:

I'm Nicholas.

Speaker:

I'm DJ.

Speaker:

And what are we talking about today, DJ?

Speaker:

Today, we are not doing another watch along.

Speaker:

Today, we Well, first of all, we were going to do this a watch along.

Speaker:

But it's a two hour movie.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

That's a long watch along.

Speaker:

And, to be fair, I know you guys like your watch alongs, but You

Speaker:

know, plus it was in theaters.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

So, uh How long was The Wizard King?

Speaker:

You know, I don't know.

Speaker:

I don't care.

Speaker:

This was Psychopath Providence Right.

Speaker:

Um, I have never I've seen a couple episodes of the first season before

Speaker:

but I don't really know a lot about it Have you ever seen it before?

Speaker:

I went into this completely Not knowing anything.

Speaker:

Yeah, uh, I thought that was pretty good.

Speaker:

The movie's pretty good.

Speaker:

Dude, the pacing in this movie was wild.

Speaker:

It was crazy.

Speaker:

Like, it's hard to say a lot of things about this movie without spoiling it.

Speaker:

So, Here's a quick, non spoiler review, um, I would say that You

Speaker:

have, this is the type of movie, you have to watch it a couple of times.

Speaker:

To get everything.

Speaker:

Cause, cause there's so much that happens in this movie, and the pacing is so fast.

Speaker:

It's super layered, and I also feel like you, you will probably

Speaker:

have to be familiar with the series to understand what's happening.

Speaker:

And if you're not familiar with the series, I actually believe that you

Speaker:

can really can still like it anyway.

Speaker:

Oh, no, I definitely liked it, but at the same time there were things you

Speaker:

were you were telling me that I was like Oh, okay, but I wouldn't have known

Speaker:

once again I've only seen the first few couple of episodes from the first

Speaker:

season But those episodes were integral to help me understand like the world.

Speaker:

This is a review So this is so we can spoil it.

Speaker:

Yeah, but this is prior to us saying spoiler warning

Speaker:

fucking you know It was good.

Speaker:

It was good.

Speaker:

What, what would you rate it out of?

Speaker:

Uh, we'll do the rating later, but I would suggest, all right, so

Speaker:

here, here's your spoiler warning.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

It's a review, so, but it's a review so we don't have to give a spoiler warning.

Speaker:

Yeah, you'd be surprised.

Speaker:

So, spoiler warning.

Speaker:

Okay, so in this movie, it's so crazy that it's, the movie's not even, this is like

Speaker:

maybe halfway through the movie, the guy, this guy who's not the main character.

Speaker:

Has already, like, had their father kill himself to save some other chick

Speaker:

because he was slipping off, cause he was slipping and he was hanging by a thread.

Speaker:

And then, he ended up shooting his ne his nephew.

Speaker:

Right because his nephew was possessed by robo Jesus and because of that he

Speaker:

decided to kill himself at his other nephews Wedding and that makes perfect

Speaker:

sense somehow Dude, and the movie wasn't even halfway over This is like this is

Speaker:

like halfway through the crazy part was is the Shiro That's his name, right?

Speaker:

Shiro?

Speaker:

Something like that?

Speaker:

Uh, uh.

Speaker:

The director?

Speaker:

Or something like that?

Speaker:

Yeah, I guess.

Speaker:

Uh, but anyway, no, that's the crazy part.

Speaker:

His dad went crazy.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

And then his son, Shiro, had to Kill because he went

Speaker:

undercover on the other side.

Speaker:

So, okay, so, this is probably confusing to everybody, Jose, so let's just do a

Speaker:

little I just want to let y'all know that I'm just as confused as y'all, whenever I

Speaker:

say this, because So this case for us in Japan The movie takes place in Japan, and

Speaker:

it's like some sort of futuristic Japan in which they have this like, law system.

Speaker:

They don't have laws, they have this thing called like, the civil system.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

That I guess decides whether you're good or bad, just based

Speaker:

off of your mental capacity.

Speaker:

It's like, oh, do you, if you, if you had the ability to be crazy,

Speaker:

you'd just go to jail instead of you actually doing anything wrong.

Speaker:

I, I guess, I guess we should probably try and set it up for people.

Speaker:

I mean, I know we've been trying to do.

Speaker:

I mean, we've already been talking about it, but basically, the movie

Speaker:

opens up with them being like, basically deciding, should we go

Speaker:

completely AI to govern society?

Speaker:

Or should we keep humans in Or should we keep humans And of course, the way

Speaker:

it's depicted, the greedy businessmen want to just go completely off of

Speaker:

AI so they can then game the system.

Speaker:

Right, game the system or, you know, just, uh, They're like,

Speaker:

whoa, whoa, whoa, we're not getting arrested right now, so screw it.

Speaker:

Plus, it's gonna be cheaper, and they get some money out of this

Speaker:

somehow, so they can just sit on their asses and do nothing.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Because government officials love nothing more than to do

Speaker:

nothing and get paid for it.

Speaker:

Right, exactly.

Speaker:

So, So, then, you know, the police officers are like, No, that's a

Speaker:

horrible idea because everything's black and white, essentially.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

And, dude, the way that, the way that the, uh, uh, uh, I I really like this

Speaker:

movie because it kind of shows it has a point to it Yeah, it has a very great

Speaker:

point to it, but at the same time it has like i'm sorry Well the I I mean,

Speaker:

I I think we can come to agree that The problem with humans is they want

Speaker:

a very simplistic way of doing things, because it's very easy to comprehend.

Speaker:

In case of point, the AI.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

But, the thing that we keep having to remind people, and the thing that,

Speaker:

that movies, that manga, that anime, all have to re have to keep reminding

Speaker:

us is that life is very complicated.

Speaker:

Yeah, and if you try and simplify it, you're just going to unleash horrors that

Speaker:

you didn't even understand were possible.

Speaker:

All right, and in this movie You know, you see, um, what the police officers

Speaker:

have to go through trying to deal with an AI system because there's now a

Speaker:

foreign AI system that has his own sense of like judgments and stuff like that.

Speaker:

That's like kind of the big thing in the movie.

Speaker:

So they, in Japan, they have this, it's called the civil system and it creates,

Speaker:

it does all the governing, right?

Speaker:

It just detects you in your brain.

Speaker:

You could be walking down the street, have done nothing, but because your hue is

Speaker:

like, Oh, he has a potential to be crazy.

Speaker:

You're just crazy.

Speaker:

You just go to jail.

Speaker:

So, but then now there's a whole nother.

Speaker:

System like it that's like, oh, I want my independence from you and I have

Speaker:

my own reasonings of laws I mean, of course the civil system doesn't like

Speaker:

that But then why wouldn't you like that because it's an AI doing the same thing.

Speaker:

It just doesn't have the same agreements as you do Right, so it's like, okay,

Speaker:

well then the AIs both have different opinions of what should be done.

Speaker:

And so it's like, okay, well, this is a bit back to square one, kind of.

Speaker:

Well, and the thing is, is like the, the AI that we're talking about in the movie

Speaker:

is called, it gets called the General.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

The other, the other AI.

Speaker:

And it started out as a medical AI to help out the civil system.

Speaker:

Um, but then do they warp it into the general or how does that?

Speaker:

I think this, I think it was supposed to help out the civil

Speaker:

system as a medical thing.

Speaker:

And then it was like, cause it was supposed to be some

Speaker:

medical component to it.

Speaker:

Kind of like how Amazon is starting about to give out insurance.

Speaker:

Where it's like, oh, you know, the civil system governs laws, but then

Speaker:

I'm going to start branching into medicine because I'm going to branch

Speaker:

into like, oh, you're, you're this sick, so you get this medicine, right?

Speaker:

But then you branch out into individualism.

Speaker:

We can all agree that, that Amazon is going to become Skynet.

Speaker:

Yes, that's the big evil corporation.

Speaker:

Amazon is going to become Skynet because you can even,

Speaker:

can't you even buy like a car?

Speaker:

You can buy a car.

Speaker:

You can do just anything you get through Amazon.

Speaker:

You can, uh, Buy a car, health insurance, watch movies, a house.

Speaker:

I think you can buy like a Kia or something off of Amazon.

Speaker:

There's, there, I forget what it was, but there's one car brand

Speaker:

that you can buy off of Amazon.

Speaker:

Alright, now I'm gonna look this up.

Speaker:

I'm gonna, I'm gonna look this up.

Speaker:

Hold on.

Speaker:

But, so, the thing is is, um, and then of course we have a rogue, um,

Speaker:

group of people that, The crazy part is, is there's a techno god in this.

Speaker:

Yeah, that's what I'm saying, like, uh, like, the general views

Speaker:

himself kind of like as a robo god.

Speaker:

Techno god.

Speaker:

Right, and the crazy part is, like, if you're one of his servants,

Speaker:

they have, like, this thing in your brain called the Divide.

Speaker:

That basically, like, it separates your lizard brain from your conscious

Speaker:

part of your brain and allows him to, like, possess you temporarily.

Speaker:

If he wants to.

Speaker:

Right, if he wants to.

Speaker:

And then, uh, yeah, and the, also the thing is, is, is with this computer

Speaker:

chip, it, it, they tell you in the movie that they can delve all of the

Speaker:

guilt and bad emotions they consider into that part of their brain.

Speaker:

Right, so they separate themselves from like guilt and like bad feelings.

Speaker:

And because of that.

Speaker:

They don't, the, the civil system doesn't view them as psychopaths.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Because psychopaths have So they can circumvent.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Crazy, crazy people have, um, It's not that, it's true that it's not really, It's

Speaker:

a misconception that they lack emotions.

Speaker:

It's just that their emotions are so crazy, Right, that they, on the outside,

Speaker:

they look like they don't have them.

Speaker:

Right?

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

But, like, you know, with, Oh, here it is.

Speaker:

Vehicle showrooms on Amazon.

Speaker:

But with this one, it's like, okay, they can hide all their

Speaker:

shame and guilt, so they look like they're just regular people.

Speaker:

You can currently buy a Hyundai, a Jeep, a Mitsubishi, a Dodge, a Nissan, a Volvo,

Speaker:

or a Vol a Volvo, or a, uh, Volkswagen.

Speaker:

No Honda, huh?

Speaker:

No, no Honda.

Speaker:

They're a superior company, clearly.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Uh, yeah, dude, you can buy, like, cars on here.

Speaker:

You know what's crazy?

Speaker:

I could buy a whole ass car.

Speaker:

Wow.

Speaker:

And I was, like, some of these deals are just terrible.

Speaker:

These are awful.

Speaker:

There's something like, like, what, like, if you went to go to a car dealership,

Speaker:

you'd be like, they'd be like, oh, this is 31, yeah, okay, well, let's talk about it.

Speaker:

You could probably debate them down, like, 5K.

Speaker:

This is just Amazon.

Speaker:

Now, one thing I can say, what is the return policy like on this?

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Is it a 30 day money back guarantee?

Speaker:

Because if that's so, dude, instead of getting a rental, you could just

Speaker:

like, honestly, You could just buy a car for 30 days and then return it.

Speaker:

Because I feel like, you know, you wouldn't pay for all of it up front.

Speaker:

You don't pay for cars that way.

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

Right, you pay for them, you know, with your car note.

Speaker:

So I feel like you could kind of do the same.

Speaker:

That would be dope.

Speaker:

You could do yeah, you could put it you could put it on your Amazon card, right?

Speaker:

So in his movie, he was crazy.

Speaker:

I remember the main girl's name.

Speaker:

I don't remember her name.

Speaker:

But, she's the one that stands up in the meeting in the beginning of the

Speaker:

movie, like, you guys are all insane.

Speaker:

Right, as a police officer, she's a lieutenant, sorry, as a police

Speaker:

lieutenant, who's like, on the ground, like, obviously, like, that we use

Speaker:

the silver system, but like, having it all AI would be, like, just physically

Speaker:

impossible, doesn't make any sense, and in fact, to prove that AI, this

Speaker:

AI system does not work, at the end of the movie, She shoots and kills

Speaker:

the police, the, the chief of police.

Speaker:

And so then on stage, so basically the civil system

Speaker:

was like, okay, you know what?

Speaker:

Because you're so as such a smart person, we're going to kick you

Speaker:

out of being a police officer and force you to become a politician.

Speaker:

And she's like, I don't want to do that.

Speaker:

And they're like, we don't give a fuck.

Speaker:

So then she spends the whole movie resisting it.

Speaker:

And then at the end, she's like, okay, I give up.

Speaker:

I'm going to be police.

Speaker:

I guess I'm going to be, uh, uh, uh, you know, a political pawn for you guys.

Speaker:

And they're like, we didn't think you would do it, but Hey, that's great.

Speaker:

She then chooses to shoot the police captain, or the police chief.

Speaker:

On her coronation of promotion.

Speaker:

Right, in front of everyone.

Speaker:

And then, because her, because she's a completely sane person.

Speaker:

And she's doing it for completely sane reasons.

Speaker:

Which makes her not crazy, so that means that her hue, which is how they determine

Speaker:

how crazy you are, doesn't change.

Speaker:

So the SILVA system is like, oh, I can't, I can't judge you as guilty for shooting

Speaker:

this person, but you clearly didn't.

Speaker:

The crazy part, cause the, they call them dominators.

Speaker:

That's with the weapons that the police officers use.

Speaker:

For the crazy, right.

Speaker:

For the crazy people, because it's a safeguard, so that you can't just You

Speaker:

know, just go around just shooting people.

Speaker:

I mean, they're clearly very powerful.

Speaker:

Right, and they turn into these crazy weapons.

Speaker:

Yeah, like, the more crazy someone is, like, the more powerful

Speaker:

of a weapon it turns into.

Speaker:

And, but anyway, so, for her to prove, she, the way she proves that only AI

Speaker:

Is a, is a problem, is, she shoots the chief of police, knowing that she's

Speaker:

not, kills her, yeah, kills her, knowing that she's not crazy, she's not any of

Speaker:

that, and then, when they come to arrest her with the dominators, they're like,

Speaker:

no, no, she's fine, yeah, we can't, we can't arrest her, because according to

Speaker:

the civil system, she's not crazy, even though she just murdered the chief of

Speaker:

police, right, so she throws her life away to prove, yeah, That we cannot

Speaker:

only be governed by this simple system.

Speaker:

And so even in she's like getting hauled away in like the police bin or

Speaker:

vehicle or whatever you want to call it.

Speaker:

And the the the AI system's like, Hey, bitch, what the fuck was that?

Speaker:

And she's like, yeah, you can't judge me.

Speaker:

I didn't do anything evil.

Speaker:

And the and the AI is so confused it goes, We're just gonna see what happens.

Speaker:

We see what effect this has on society.

Speaker:

We're gonna lock you up, but like You didn't do anything wrong, so you

Speaker:

could probably leave when you want to.

Speaker:

She was, uh, the AI system was like, Well, um, was this your plan all along?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I guess we'll see how it, you know, if it affects anything.

Speaker:

It was like, game recognizes game, bro.

Speaker:

Like, hey.

Speaker:

Because she was supposed to become like, uh, there was the chief of police,

Speaker:

and then there was like, the director.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

She was supposed to become like, the director.

Speaker:

The director of like, the whole Right, you know, and instead she

Speaker:

decides I'm just gonna cap the chief of police and I show you guys Right

Speaker:

and ruins her entire life and then they let the crazy dude go, right?

Speaker:

So if you're in this in this world, if you're crazy and you want to steal the

Speaker:

world, you can be called a dog You're like a police dog So then you go hunt

Speaker:

down other crazy people because you can like think like them quote unquote.

Speaker:

So But it's like it's like it's a suicide squad.

Speaker:

You're right, but it's wild because like he's a dog So even though they know he's

Speaker:

crazy and his name's curio or curio or something like that You know, he's crazy

Speaker:

and could potentially kill someone They had to let him go because he's his job

Speaker:

is to be crazy and hunt down other crazy people So the crazy guy gets let go

Speaker:

because it's his job to be fucking crazy, but someone who's completely sane who's

Speaker:

murdered someone is not considered crazy.

Speaker:

So she gets locked up though.

Speaker:

The crazy, you know, the crazy part is, is throughout this movie, you know, what

Speaker:

really impacts everything, which I think it's a subtle nod to what they were trying

Speaker:

to portray as a message, knives and guns.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So like, so the dominators, obviously the dominator by itself, the whole point of

Speaker:

it is, is no innocent lives are taken.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

It's, it's operated by the civil system on like wifi.

Speaker:

So like basically the silver system reads the gun and it's like, Okay.

Speaker:

Well, who you're pointing at isn't crazy.

Speaker:

So on fire or they say who you're pointing at is kind of crazy.

Speaker:

So I'll stun them or it says who you're pointing at is super crazy.

Speaker:

So I'm going to make them explode.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

But all of the, all of the key points of what happens during this

Speaker:

movie, the regular guns work happen with knives and pistols, right?

Speaker:

That's, that's wild.

Speaker:

And the crazy part is, when the shit really goes down,

Speaker:

everybody's just using knives.

Speaker:

Yeah, because like, the gun, the, the, uh, the witch mongolians aren't working.

Speaker:

Um, and then They run out of bullets, so they just start,

Speaker:

they just start using knives.

Speaker:

The crazy part is, is the, um, what, I forget what the other group's name

Speaker:

is, uh, what, what did they call them?

Speaker:

Uh.

Speaker:

We'll just say the rebels.

Speaker:

The rebels.

Speaker:

You got the police and the rebels.

Speaker:

The police and the rebels.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

So, the rebels, um, They, they, they do this mission and the crazy guy He

Speaker:

shoots the dude in the head Right.

Speaker:

And comes back to life.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

That's why, that's why like the, the rebel guy who was shot in

Speaker:

the, in the, he gets talking his in the, in like his left eye eye.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

And his left eye dead.

Speaker:

He comes back to life because like the robo guy person like brings him

Speaker:

back to life and it's like, okay, well I'm not done using you yet.

Speaker:

So, it's wild, like, seeing that, and then also it says, oh, protect you from

Speaker:

the civil system, so you can walk, even though you're crazy, you can walk around

Speaker:

like you're not, because I am an AI who also knows how to block that other AI.

Speaker:

And I know how to hide your emotions.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

So then, it's like, oh, you know, believe that I will bring you back

Speaker:

to life, because I can do that.

Speaker:

And then it consistently does it.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Like, consistently.

Speaker:

Bro.

Speaker:

The dude dies, like, two times.

Speaker:

Yeah, two or three times.

Speaker:

And he's like, the mission is not complete.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

And what's wild is, uh Oh my god, like, there's so much going on this movie.

Speaker:

Guys, like, there's I was telling you at the end of this movie, there's like

Speaker:

four seasons of stuff that goes on.

Speaker:

If this was a TV show, it'd be like three or four seasons packed into two episodes.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

She starts off as a lieutenant of police.

Speaker:

And ends up in jail, an innocent person locked in jail, even

Speaker:

though she's clearly guilty.

Speaker:

That's the wild part about it.

Speaker:

Like, this could have been stretched into like, three movies.

Speaker:

Like I think that it also has like this type of writing is not you can't

Speaker:

really out like it's to say that someone outlined this whole This whole thing I

Speaker:

would say is bullshit This is kind of like the kind of writing where someone's

Speaker:

just writing it with a sea of the pants They're like, okay, and doesn't this

Speaker:

happen didn't happen didn't happen and they kind of try to make sense of it

Speaker:

at the end But it worked really well because I tell you what if he outlined

Speaker:

this whole thing this guy's a writing genius Do but and the the thing that we

Speaker:

have to impress upon people is And I know we've brought this up multiple times, but

Speaker:

the reason we've brought it up multiple times is because it happens so fast.

Speaker:

Whenever she shoots the chief of police This is not something that's cinematic.

Speaker:

This is not something that's built up.

Speaker:

She just walks on stage, the police chief says, Okay, do you

Speaker:

swear to be a good politician?

Speaker:

She pulls out the nine, shoots her immediately.

Speaker:

The other police officers get on stage and try to arrest her with the Dominators.

Speaker:

The Dominators say, don't arrest this person because they're innocent.

Speaker:

And then it just cuts to her like, in j like cuts to the news, or the news clip

Speaker:

of them being like, She shot this girl.

Speaker:

It all happened super fast.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

It's not like your traditional anime build up.

Speaker:

Oh, climax.

Speaker:

There is no build up.

Speaker:

It's just only payoff.

Speaker:

I think a lot, I think.

Speaker:

And this is at the very end of the movie where we think, Okay, so she's

Speaker:

decided, She's relegated herself to the fate of, Hey, I'm trying, I'm

Speaker:

going to play the long game and try and change the system and we're like,

Speaker:

Oh, she's going to get murdered by somebody corrupt and blah, blah, blah.

Speaker:

She's like, no, reverse Uno card, bitch.

Speaker:

I'm doing the murdering.

Speaker:

I'm a speed run this.

Speaker:

I think it has a lot to do with the, um, the meaning of, you

Speaker:

know, what they're trying to say.

Speaker:

Right, like that AI, it is not a replacement for humans.

Speaker:

It's just not possible, right?

Speaker:

Yeah, well, and the thing is is I thought they were said they were I was like Oh,

Speaker:

this movie is a setup for another movie.

Speaker:

It's not it's not I was like, oh, okay, so we'll have this would definitely be like

Speaker:

a cinematic universe in America, right?

Speaker:

This it would it was going to set up for another movie to be like, oh, okay, and

Speaker:

it was like Bitch, you got me fucked up.

Speaker:

We're gonna change the mind, Link.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Alright, so this was our review of Psycho Pass Providence.

Speaker:

What do you think, Link, at the end?

Speaker:

Oh, dude, this I would have to give this movie probably like

Speaker:

an eight and a half out of ten.

Speaker:

Yeah, yeah, I'd say eight and a half is pretty accurate.

Speaker:

Eight and a half.

Speaker:

I'll say 8.

Speaker:

7.

Speaker:

I don't know if I can give it a nine, a whole nine.

Speaker:

But it's pretty freaking close.

Speaker:

It's pretty close to that nine.

Speaker:

I'm not gonna lie.

Speaker:

This was one of the most I have to go Actually, i'm gonna go back and watch the

Speaker:

anime the thing is is I have, I didn't know anything about this show prior to

Speaker:

watching the movie and you knew maybe a little bit, but I imagine if we go back

Speaker:

and watch the seasons of the TV show, we'd probably come back and be like, dude,

Speaker:

this is like a nine and a half, right?

Speaker:

This movie's like awesome.

Speaker:

You know what I'm saying?

Speaker:

But I loved how it was done so tastefully well, where it's like, if you didn't

Speaker:

know anything about it, that's okay.

Speaker:

You can still enjoy yourself.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

And I, and like unlike now with the MCU, where you like have to know

Speaker:

what happened previously, right?

Speaker:

I mean, the thing is, is you could follow it without knowing anything but.

Speaker:

Because of the, we're in the age of instant gratification, you know

Speaker:

everybody would be paused in the movie be like, okay, well, who's this person?

Speaker:

Who's this person?

Speaker:

Who's that person?

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

You know, let me look up on the internet or, uh, somebody, if they, let's say

Speaker:

these characters names, just letting you know, we have not fully seen the season.

Speaker:

Speaker:
