Speaker:Today, we we just recently started watching this show, Hanji made no Ippo.
Speaker:Do you want to tell the audience how we got To watching this anime?
Speaker:Yeah, sure.
Speaker:It was a me and Nicholas, we have day jobs And those day jobs require
Speaker:us To sometimes be attached To the entertainment industry And because of
Speaker:those day jobs we're working on a project right now that has to do with boxing.
Speaker:Someone was like, hey, check out a boxing TV show, you should check out Hajime.
Speaker:And we're like, okay, cool.
Speaker:And they're like, you should do it on your podcast.
Speaker:I'm like, chill out, bro.
Speaker:I don't know but the show's really good.
Speaker:Yeah, the, I would hate to, I really hate to be that guy that
Speaker:says, oh, you have to watch it.
Speaker:It gets really good, after, a couple of episodes because I know on the past, in
Speaker:the past, we have said, Hey man, just make the anime good from the start.
Speaker:How hard is that, man?
Speaker:And the thing is it's not that it's not good from the start, but it is a bit slow
Speaker:and it is like a slow burn type of thing.
Speaker:It keeps you at least interested.
Speaker:So we're, so we're reviewing episodes one through ten.
Speaker:Yeah, one through ten.
Speaker:And the main character's name is Ippo.
Speaker:Makanouchi.
Speaker:Ippo Makanouchi.
Speaker:And Ippo basically he, it's the typical anime setup.
Speaker:He gets bullied in high school, and then he gets saved by a boxer.
Speaker:And then Takamora.
Speaker:Takamora.
Speaker:He gets saved by Takamora who saves him from some bullies, which because of anime
Speaker:logic sparks his interest in boxing.
Speaker:Also, this also implies a grown man was like beating up 16 year olds.
Speaker:And trolling high schools.
Speaker:What is he he was out running.
Speaker:Oh, yeah.
Speaker:He was out running, right?
Speaker:And then he sees Ippo being beat up under a bridge and he's you know what?
Speaker:I'm not only am I going to stop this fight, I'm going to beat up
Speaker:the children that we're doing.
Speaker:Someone's got to teach them.
Speaker:And then, we don't.
Speaker:Someone's got to raise them, either their parents or the streets.
Speaker:And we also remember the reason why he gets bullied so much is because
Speaker:his mom runs a fishing business, so he always smells like fish.
Speaker:Oh yeah, so these bullies are like, haha, your single mom was trying to
Speaker:pro you're helping out your single mom, trying to provide for her, by helping
Speaker:out with the family business so you guys aren't poor and homeless, even though
Speaker:you guys are obviously clearly poor.
Speaker:We should beat you up for this, because and that's the reason
Speaker:why his self esteem is so low.
Speaker:That's the one thing that anime never really connects with.
Speaker:In real life at least American culture, I don't know, maybe in
Speaker:Japanese culture, they beat up on kids who have single parents.
Speaker:But, maybe, I don't know, maybe that's what ticks them off.
Speaker:But over here, it's usually oh, you look funny, or even if someone
Speaker:smells funny, you're like, Dude, why do you stink like that?
Speaker:And someone goes, Oh, I'm sorry, my dad's dead.
Speaker:So I had to help out my single mom on our, in our business.
Speaker:You know what I'm saying?
Speaker:So that way, we can eat.
Speaker:And you're just like, oh, okay.
Speaker:Yeah, now you feel like a dick.
Speaker:Yeah, and then you see And then you would also, if you saw someone picking
Speaker:on this guy, you'd be like, Oh, I'm about to beat up this bully's ass.
Speaker:Bro don't pick on this guy.

Speaker:His, it's not his fault he smells like fish.
Speaker:He's trying to survive, like, anyway, so that sparks his interest in boxing.
Speaker:And he has natural punching talent.
Speaker:And his what's the, Takamura basically gives him a test.
Speaker:Cause he's ah, I want to be a boxer.
Speaker:And he basically gives him a test.
Speaker:And Takamura's eh, I don't really want to deal with you.
Speaker:And he said, listen, if you can catch ten leaves.
Speaker:With your jabs all in the same cuz he's got a hit the tree And then he leaves
Speaker:Russell and right if you could do that, then I'll train you I'll bring you to
Speaker:the gym and you can become a boxer, which is funny because After this, he
Speaker:does not train him, the coach does.
Speaker:Exactly.
Speaker:Actually Well, to be fair, the coach is I'm training him.
Speaker:Because Takamora's hey, I found him.
Speaker:But he's nah, but you can fuck off.
Speaker:I'm training him.
Speaker:Yeah, because Takamora's a bit of a how would you describe Takamora, Nicholas?
Speaker:A dick.
Speaker:Yeah.

Speaker:And I feel like that would be grounds for not being my friend anymore.

Speaker:Which is like a plot point in one of the episodes?
Speaker:In one of the episodes, the plot point is, Oh my god, you've got a huge dick, ha.
Speaker:Yeah, uh, this is, that part was mad weird, but the rest of it's good!

Speaker:We're taking it to a new level!
Speaker:The, yeah the shower scenes are, I, maybe that's a cultural thing?
Speaker:We are Southern Senpais, so we are exploring different cultures.
Speaker:That's not a side that I really want to explore.
Speaker:No, when you're in high school, you have locker rooms when you're like,
Speaker:training and stuff like that, but I've It's not been my experience of people
Speaker:going around grabbing each other's dicks, but once again, maybe it's
Speaker:because we're from the south, right?

Speaker:Usually out of these 10 episodes, it was maybe like seven
Speaker:minutes, which is very jarring.
Speaker:But and then, so we sit there and, like you said, Ippo has this incredible boxing
Speaker:power, punching power that they find out just through the magic of anime logic.
Speaker:And his, he sucks.
Speaker:Yeah, he sucks pretty hard, but he has like good punching power.
Speaker:So they're like, oh okay, cool.
Speaker:So then, they start, he's, he also not Hold on, we gotta back up.
Speaker:By the way, Takamora did not think that he would Succeed in the leaf thing.
Speaker:No, he didn't.
Speaker:He just told him that just to just like to bullshit him, but Apo actually does do it.
Speaker:So that's why he's oh, I guess I have to train you now.
Speaker:Because the thing is he offered that as a training to be like,
Speaker:if you'll just get away from me.
Speaker:He was like, nobody with no boxing experience could ever do this.
Speaker:But because anime.
Speaker:He does it.
Speaker:And then he gets introduced to all of the, the friends of the boxing gym.
Speaker:All the other characters.
Speaker:They talk about the importance of discipline and hard work and, he
Speaker:journeyed towards becoming a boxer and he's oh, maybe I can Now, I watched
Speaker:the American dub of this and the coach sounds like he sounds like Mr.
Speaker:Krabs from Spongebob.
Speaker:He sounds exactly like Mr.
Speaker:Krabs.
Speaker:Get your head out of the game, kid!
Speaker:But it's like Mr.
Speaker:Krabs saying it.
Speaker:I didn't realize that till just now that he sounds like Mr.
Speaker:Krabs.
Speaker:He sounds exactly like Mr.

Speaker:It's if you in this show, because we watched the English dub of it, in this
Speaker:show, if you like, Epo, I need you to, I know you, you need to stop boxing
Speaker:and start frying up some patties.
Speaker:I would not have thought twice.
Speaker:I'm like, yeah, no, that makes sense.
Speaker:You know what's really crazy is that, The friends that they find, they're actually
Speaker:really encouraging of Ippo, right?
Speaker:Because whenever he first starts, everybody is just miles better than him.
Speaker:And they're just like, but then they're just like, oh this
Speaker:dude has got knockout power.
Speaker:If he's got that, then, you know what's interesting?
Speaker:There's like a, there's like a have some shots where you see
Speaker:there's clearly a whole bunch of other people there in the gym.
Speaker:So there's Takamura, there's Ippo, there's the coach, there's like
Speaker:the general manager guy who wears glasses, and there's two other guys.
Speaker:Who is that's like the main cast.
Speaker:And then, he has this little gym rival.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Rival with Midoriya.
Speaker:Midoriya.
Speaker:And Midoriya's thing is he can't throw heavy punches, but his
Speaker:technique is like Impeccable.
Speaker:He's like a genius, right?
Speaker:Cause his dad's a his dad was a former professional boxer.
Speaker:So he's Because of anime logic, what ends up happening is Ippo has
Speaker:never boxed before in his life.
Speaker:He is just a little punk.
Speaker:And Midoriya has been training his entire life.
Speaker:Has flawless footwork.
Speaker:The only thing he lacks is punching power.
Speaker:And Ippo gets there and is Okay, if you can survive in the ring
Speaker:for three rounds, I'll make sure you become a professional boxer.
Speaker:And what he means by that is that he'll get his, he'll go
Speaker:off and do the boxing card.
Speaker:And Ippo wins because anime.
Speaker:Because anime.
Speaker:But I will say this.
Speaker:And mi what's Miata, right?
Speaker:Miata the rival mid, is it mid or mid Miata?
Speaker:It's Miata.
Speaker:Yeah, it's E Iro.
Speaker:Iro Miata.
Speaker:I'm thinking Meria from my hero.
Speaker:Academia.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I'm not really little of the wrong show here but anyway, we are
Speaker:southerners, so so is all the M names.
Speaker:Hey, y'all gotta figure that out.
Speaker:Anyway, so Iro Miata, this guy, he takes that loss and is you know what?
Speaker:Now that I've lost and I'm gonna go enter, it's cause they enter in, I
Speaker:think a tournament later, don't they?
Speaker:First, what happens is he loses.
Speaker:But then And he's shook to his core about this.
Speaker:But then But I went to, bro, I've been training for 10 years, and
Speaker:this guy's ooh, I to do anything.
Speaker:And then he knocks me out, I'm like, okay, so what the fuck have I been doing?
Speaker:Yeah, my whole life, if this nobody, who's nothing, Can sit there.
Speaker:Mind you, these people are like 16 years old.
Speaker:Oh, yeah.
Speaker:Because anime, they're 16.
Speaker:And then and even though he, then he goes I think he gets his, I
Speaker:think he gets his boxing car too.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And but what ends up happening is he has the three months, right?
Speaker:They train for three months to counter, what's very interesting is I like how
Speaker:they have kinda like realistic timeframes.
Speaker:They're not like, oh, your fight is next week.
Speaker:Give a week to master this.
Speaker:Okay, you fight's in another week, give em a week to master this.
Speaker:It's no, it takes months of training, right?
Speaker:It take, it takes months and months of training.
Speaker:And there's a lot of training in the show.
Speaker:There is a lot of training in this show, but I think it's realistic,
Speaker:because in some instances, they're like, Oh, you have a month till this
Speaker:fight, so you better really train up.
Speaker:It's okay a month is a long time.
Speaker:And they're like, no, it's not.
Speaker:It's no time at all.
Speaker:It's no time at all, but at least it's not like in, Dragon Ball Z, where it's oh.
Speaker:You had 48 minutes.
Speaker:You have three days to make sure that you don't lose in this fight
Speaker:that will destroy the Earth.
Speaker:So I think that the one thing I like about this show I'll say this one
Speaker:thing I really enjoy about the show is that the main character, he's like a
Speaker:very he's like a very likable person.
Speaker:I think this is like the era of like anime where like all the main characters
Speaker:are just like unnaturally nice.
Speaker:To like early thousands, like late nineties or something
Speaker:like that, those first seasons.
Speaker:Also whenever he wins a match, he just bows.
Speaker:He's Oh, thank you.
Speaker:I think they do that in Japan, though.
Speaker:I think they bow for Oh, so we're just the dicks that are just like,
Speaker:whenever we win a match, we're just like, Yeah, fuck you, man!
Speaker:Yeah, I think that's I think they do to show respect or thanks.

Speaker:And then also, towards the end, it's in preparation for his first match, right?
Speaker:He has his first match with this guy named Oda.
Speaker:And Oda is this, first of all, once again, Ippo is 16.
Speaker:Oldest mid twenties, and they're both featherweight class.
Speaker:And for some people who are in the featherweight, these guys have
Speaker:some giant, ripped muscles to be in this frickin featherweight class.
Speaker:These people look like they're in their mid twenties.
Speaker:And heavyweight, dude.
Speaker:Epo shows up ripped, jacked, and they're like, I'm like, dude, what?
Speaker:I thought he was a And they're like, he's he looks huge.
Speaker:And he's yeah, I'm a featherweight.
Speaker:Are you?

Speaker:And I was like these people are 125 pounds.
Speaker:Bro, I ain't gonna lie, that episode where wherever that, the
Speaker:evil guy's name is where they had, where they were going for that card.
Speaker:He, so there's this, I don't know who this person is yet.
Speaker:I think he's, I think it's Machiba is his name.

Speaker:He they took some sort of tests for the boxing card, to get their boxing
Speaker:card, which I think is pretty standard in Japan, I assume, I have no idea.
Speaker:But, during the fight, all you had to do was just say, you put on your headgear,
Speaker:you go in front of the judges and say, Hey, just so that you know how to
Speaker:box, just punch around a couple times, dodge a couple times, and then leave.
Speaker:You're not really supposed to win or lose who cares, right?
Speaker:It's just to show that you can box in general.
Speaker:Or that you're learning something at your gym, right?
Speaker:So oh, I know different kinds of punches, I know how to defend, this is that.
Speaker:This man obliterates one of the this other kid for no reason.
Speaker:With a whole bunch of Flicker Jabs.
Speaker:I do First of all, that's something that this series has done a lot.
Speaker:They see a whole bunch of different types of punches.
Speaker:That I did not even know existed.

Speaker:loses his determination to get better.

Speaker:His, Miyata was like his goal.
Speaker:He lost to Miyata the first time.

Speaker:Now I'm going to fight Miata and like he wins the second time so
Speaker:now he's lost that and he meets him outside right and then this man
Speaker:wanted to be Sasuke so bad standing on top of the stairs Looking down.

Speaker:earn money by working a regular job.

Speaker:So Oda, his upcoming rival, so at the end he stepped in the ring, but we
Speaker:actually didn't get to see the fight yet.
Speaker:This guy named Oda is basically, he's a good boxer, but he's just
Speaker:super lazy because he wins all of his fights really lazily.
Speaker:So he doesn't go to training, nothing.
Speaker:And this guy, his trainer is hey, you know what?
Speaker:If you don't start boxing seriously or take box seriously, I'm not gonna
Speaker:let you have sex with my daughter anymore Wait, what and so have
Speaker:you lost his last three matches?
Speaker:Yeah, he lost his last three matches because he wasn't training you're just
Speaker:being lazy because when he would go out and do his road work His, the coach's
Speaker:daughter would be like at a cafe.
Speaker:Yeah, and you just go meet her with her And he would just stop his
Speaker:road work and meet her in the cafe.
Speaker:And the crazy part is, the coach would know that!

Speaker:And would be out searching around for him.
Speaker:How big is this town that he knows, like First of all, it seemed In the, I think
Speaker:they said in the episode, he was like, I always meet you at the same cafe.
Speaker:Bro, coach, why are you looking?
Speaker:You know where they are you saw He's over there, and he's about to put the schmooze
Speaker:on your daughter again because apparently they're in a relationship right and then
Speaker:so she comes to him and she says hey listen if you don't Win your next fight.
Speaker:I'm breaking up with you and he's oh my I, look, I'm a man and,
Speaker:Nicholas also has the Y chromosome.
Speaker:Let me tell you something, that's a good motivator.
Speaker:He literally changes almost instantaneously.
Speaker:She's look, if we, if you don't, if you don't take this boxing
Speaker:seriously, it's over between us.

Speaker:It's a great, it's a great, match.

Speaker:That's like episode 11 and 12.

Speaker:And episode 10 is And episode 10 is when they went into They, they just
Speaker:We tried to fake it as if we didn't watch those episodes, but we did.

Speaker:I want to say something that's really I will say this, I think there's something
Speaker:also a lot of modern anime is lacking.
Speaker:It's like really good parts to end the end the episode on.
Speaker:It's like addictive.
Speaker:Yes, so The pacing is really great.
Speaker:The pacing is great because episode 10 ends on the fact that he just
Speaker:goes into It starts, so it's oh man, now I gotta click the next one.
Speaker:Now I gotta click the next one.
Speaker:I gotta find out if the guy, you know Gets his girl back.
Speaker:Does the man get the coochie or not?
Speaker:But what do you think about the first two episodes so far?
Speaker:I think it's pretty good.
Speaker:As a writer, what do you think about these episodes?
Speaker:I personally don't think I could have written this.
Speaker:Or I don't think it's a style of writing that I am really
Speaker:into, but I really enjoy it.
Speaker:And so I personally, I really like the series.
Speaker:I like a whole bunch of things about it.
Speaker:It's pacing is really great.
Speaker:I enjoy a lot of its characters.
Speaker:Something I will say is that it does a really great job of getting you to like
Speaker:a character in five to ten minutes.
Speaker:Something that this series does really well.
Speaker:You can meet some, meet, they can say, Hey, look, this is my friend, Bojo!
Speaker:And you'll be like, okay, this is some new character, Bojo.
Speaker:And then five minutes later, you'll be like, I'd kill someone for Bojo.
Speaker:Bojo's awesome.
Speaker:One of the craziest things about this anime, is the character development is
Speaker:so good, but so fast at the same time.
Speaker:It's like hard to imagine that I care so much about all these side characters,
Speaker:and it's not just you walk in the gym and it's just, dialogue here, dialogue there.
Speaker:These side characters are developed as well.
Speaker:Yeah, everyone's, every single one of the characters is so developed, you understand
Speaker:all of their motivations and You're like, you understand all their motivations,
Speaker:their hopes, their dreams, all 27 of the people, and it's only 10 minutes in.
Speaker:And you're like, dude, what is going on here?
Speaker:One thing, and that's why I just really have to give it up to its pacing.
Speaker:It's pacing is at that perfect mode to where it's fast enough to where
Speaker:nothing is, it's fast enough to where nothing is wasted, but it's slow enough
Speaker:for you to just, for you to enjoy it.
Speaker:Yes, it's for it to be believable, rather for it to there's a
Speaker:lot of it that is believable.
Speaker:I think that's I think that's its biggest thing.
Speaker:Yeah, because they're training for months upon months of for
Speaker:this one fight for this one fight.
Speaker:I think people really What's the word?
Speaker:They really identify with Ippo, right?
Speaker:Because what the saying goes, it's like, it's okay if you don't know how to fight,
Speaker:but if you choose not, if you don't want to learn how to, or no, what is it?
Speaker:It's it's okay if you're weak, but if you stay weak.
Speaker:Then that's the issue.
Speaker:Oh, I thought I was used to force.
Speaker:Something like that.
Speaker:What are you doing, Star Wars?
Speaker:What the fuck?
Speaker:He said something like that.
Speaker:We're not talking about Star Wars.
Speaker:This is anime.

Speaker:I know, you're talking about that one where it's like It's
Speaker:better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in water.
Speaker:No, that's, but I get what you're Is that what you're trying to say or no?
Speaker:No, that's not what I'm trying It's a different one.
Speaker:It's But that's basically the sentiment.
Speaker:It's Hey, listen, there's no problem if you are weak, But it's
Speaker:your problem if you stay weak.
Speaker:Thanos.
Speaker:Somebody.

Speaker:Somebody.
Speaker:I don't know who it is.
Speaker:So I'm no better off than you.
Speaker:I don't know, but I feel like I have heard that from somewhere before.

Speaker:It's probably another anime.
Speaker:Probably.
Speaker:But we're not.
Speaker:What would you say about this?
Speaker:Do you like it?
Speaker:I like it it's got a bit of a slow burn to it.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:The fight I do like the way, like the inner dialogue.
Speaker:Some of it's not, because usually, especially with anime, you have
Speaker:these long inner dialogues.
Speaker:It's hilarious.
Speaker:We were watching what was that other anime, the soccer
Speaker:anime that we were watching?
Speaker:Bluelock.
Speaker:Bluelock, and then, the inner Man, the inner dialogues in Bluelock
Speaker:were like the whole episode.
Speaker:The whole episode was like, I can't believe I like boxing.
Speaker:The, I can't believe I'm smart enough I can't believe I'm smart
Speaker:enough to understand that if I kick this soccer ball at this blade of
Speaker:grass, it'll kick off at a 45 degree angle, and you're just like, What?
Speaker:What are you talking about?
Speaker:And he's But, my power is that I see where the other soccer players are.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Y So I'll Spatial awareness.
Speaker:What?
Speaker:Spatial awareness?
Speaker:That's your ability?
Speaker:That was so stupid.
Speaker:But I will say this is the inner, this is like the type of anime we
Speaker:expect to be a lot of inner dialogues, because they're in there boxing, right?
Speaker:There is inner dialogues, but it's not as long or as big as I originally
Speaker:expected them to, and I think it's because he has those other side
Speaker:characters, who are basically saying Oh, hey, watch out, or Actually, this
Speaker:is what's going on with that person.
Speaker:You know what I'm saying?
Speaker:Also, what I think that this anime does is portray real friendship dynamics.
Speaker:Instead of it being like, Don't get me wrong, the fantasy anime
Speaker:friendship dynamics are cool.
Speaker:But I think that In this anime, the friendship dynamics are
Speaker:a little bit more realistic.
Speaker:Yeah, that's cause like, when you're really friends with someone,
Speaker:sometimes they're just jerks, just cause they are, for no reason.
Speaker:Because you can just do that.
Speaker:Comparative to like, a lot of other animes, they're like,
Speaker:we're friends, so look, here, let me share this bread with you.
Speaker:No, your best friend's gonna be like, hey man, do you want some bread?
Speaker:Yeah, sure, man.
Speaker:All right, cool.
Speaker:I'm gonna eat all this for myself.
Speaker:I don't know where you're getting your bread from, but hey, You know.
Speaker:I wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire.
Speaker:And they'll be like, hey, that guy's mean.
Speaker:and you're like, no, that's my friend.
Speaker:He's a dickhead.
Speaker:Anyway we're going to, in the next episode, we're gonna do,
